Bio
Mark Caserta, a three-time conference coach of the year, completed his 13th season as head coach of the Penn State Brandywine softball team in 2026.
The only head coach in Brandywine softball history, Caserta has guided the team to 11-straight conference championships, most recently winning United East Conference titles during the Lions’ first two seasons of NCAA Division III play. This spring, Brandywine won 30-plus games for the fifth-straight season and topped Penn College 3-2 on May 9 to capture the UEC crown. Caserta’s team featured a six all-conference players and the program's first two NFCA All-Region standouts.
Brandywine has enjoyed unprecedented success during Caserta’s 13 years on the bench, posting a record of 341-149-1 (.695). Caserta’s 2026 squad won its final 27 games, a team-record winning streak, and went undefeated in United East play at 16-0. Against conference competition, Caserta owns a 168-28 mark, including a 30-2 record versus United East foes.
Prior to joining the United East, Caserta led the Lions to nine straight Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) championships, while compiling a record of 307-142-1 (.684). Caserta’s squads are the first-ever from Brandywine to win at least 10 consecutive conference titles.
Brandywine competed at the 2015-2024 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Softball World Series after claiming the PSUAC’s automatic bid to the tournament. The Lions placed ninth during their first appearance and finished in the top five during seven of their next eight trips to the World Series, including back-to-back Small College World Series titles in 2023 and 2024.
Under Caserta’s direction, 33 Brandywine student-athletes earned USCAA All-American honors and 69 have been selected to all-conference teams. Additionally, he has guided three conference rookies of the year, a pair of conference Pitchers of the Year, and three conference Players of the Year. Emma McElroy was named United East Rookie of the Year in 2025.
Caserta’s teams have also done exceptionally well in the classroom with 152 student-athletes earning academic all-conference honors and 33 claiming USCAA National Academic Team accolades during the past 11 seasons. Additionally, three of Caserta’s student-athletes took home the top academic honor in the USCAA, winning USCAA Student-Athlete of the Year. Four more received the John S. Egli Award as the top female scholar-athlete in the PSUAC; most recently, Karly Rees in 2024.
Before arriving at Carroll, Caserta was the head coach at Bishop McDevitt in Glenside, Pa., for three seasons (2005-07). During his first season, Caserta led the team to nine victories after the squad had won just two the season prior to his arrival. He was also the assistant varsity girl’s basketball coach for two seasons while at Bishop McDevitt.
Additionally, Caserta was selected as the head coach for the Philadelphia Catholic League in the Softball Carpenter Cup for four seasons. Caserta also was an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Spirit, a 16U softball travel team in 2004 and coached baseball for seven years in the 1990s at the Elmwood Park Boys and Girls Club. He led the boy’s baseball travel teams to district playoffs and league championships four times. Additionally, he served the assistant varsity baseball coach at West Catholic High School in Philadelphia in 2002.
Caserta is a graduate of West Catholic High School where he played baseball, football and basketball. He was named All-Catholic League in baseball during both his junior and senior seasons as a catcher and third baseman. Also a veteran official, Caserta is a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Navy. Caserta has four children, Elizabeth, Malarie, Mark and Matthew, and resides in Ridley with his wife, Michelle.
