Brandywine Storms Back To Earn First United East Win
MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Brandywine limited Lancaster Bible to 5-of-25 shooting and forced 12 turnovers during the second half to overcome a 16-point deficit and earn its first United East Conference women's basketball victory by a score of 52-49 on Tuesday night.
Lancaster Bible shot 46 percent during the final half, but was locked down by the Lions' defense in the second half and Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) provided the game-winning shot with 22 seconds to play.
Following Taylor Mims' (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) layup at the 3:04 mark of the first quarter, Brandywine held an 11-8 lead, but Lancaster Bible erupted for the final nine points of the period to jump in front 17-11.
The Chargers' run continued into the second quarter as LBC netted eight-straight points to lead by 11 and the visitors took a 14-point edge into the halftime break.
Lancaster Bible led by as many as 16 points with 7:03 to go in the third quarter before Brandywine came storming back.
Watson netted the final six points of an 8-0 spurt that trimmed the margin to 35-27. After the teams swapped baskets, Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) combined for the final five points of the period to trim the margin to 38-34 through 30 minutes.
Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) started the final stanza with a triple and Allen added a bucket to give Brandywine the lead. The Lions pushed the margin to six following six-straight points from Watson, the last basket coming on a fast-break layup with 3:23 to go.
Lancaster Bible answered with five-straight points and after an Allen free throw, took the lead when Natane White buried a triple with 49 seconds to play.
Twenty-seven seconds later, Watson responded with a long jumper to push Brandywine back on top at 50-49.
After LBC misfired on a layup, Allen grabbed the rebound and later knocked down two free throws to provide the final margin. A final three-point heave from Lancaster Bible was off the mark at the buzzer.
Watson poured in 14 of her team-high 18 points during the second half, while Allen notched nine points and Diawara added eight. Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds and Kemp hauled in 10 boards.
Brandywine was limited to 31 percent shooting during the game, but forced 23 LBC turnovers, while committing just 10 miscues of its own.
Brandywine (2-17, 1-10 UEC) travels to Baltimore for a matchup with Notre Dame of Maryland Saturday at 1:00 PM.
