Brandywine Falls In Three Sets

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team was defeated on its home court by Cairn University in straight sets, falling by scores of 25-9, 25-16, 25-10, on Thursday night.

Ava De La Osa (Dania Beach, Fla./Nova) posted 11 of Brandywine's 41 digs, while Emma O'Reilly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Aaliyna Patel (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) both tallied eight.

Morgan Rizer (Denton, Md./North Caroline) produced three blocks and paced the Lions offensively with five service aces. O'Reilly registered three kills and Sophie Scrivo (Chester, Conn./Valley Regional) recorded four assists.

Brandywine trimmed an early four-point deficit to just one, but Cairn answered with nine of the next 11 points to gain a 12-5 edge. The Highlanders took advantage of 13 Brandywine errors during the opening set to win it 25-9.

The Lions trailed 17-8 during the second period before two aces from Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and one from Rizer aided a 6-1 spurt, cutting the margin to 18-14. Cairn responded by recording three consecutive points and later used back-to-back kills to claim the second set.

A pair of 6-0 Cairn runs helped the visitors pull away during the final frame and complete the sweep.

Brandywine (1-5) heads north to Abington for a tri-match against host Penn State Abington (11:00 AM) and Bryn Mawr (1:00 PM) on Saturday.
