Historic Comeback Caps Brandywine’s Opening Day

ASTON, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine completed the biggest comeback in program history, rallying from an 11-run deficit to defeat Penn State Mont Alto 12-11 in eight innings in game two of a season-opening baseball doubleheader late Saturday night. The squads split the twinbill as Mont Alto claimed a 12-1 triumph in game one.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 12, Penn State Mont Alto 11

Brandywine trailed 11-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning before reeling off 12-straight runs to complete the largest comeback in program history. The Lions scored 10 times during the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extra frames and Jamey Massung (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) walked Brandywine off with a win via a RBI single in the eighth.

Evan Shade's (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) run-scoring groundout pushed Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) across the plate to make the count 11-1 through six innings.

Brandywine took advantage of six walks, a hit by pitch and three errors, while collecting four hits as the Lions plated 10 runs during the bottom of the seventh inning.

Nate Turner's (Dover, Del./Dover) first of two hits during the inning was a two-run double that got the scoring started. Two batters later, Shade delivered a two-run base hit that brought the count to 11-5.

After a pair of walks re-loaded the bases, Massung worked a base on balls to force in a run and Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) was hit by the first pitch he saw as Brandywine added another marker. Ivano Romaniello (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) scored via wild pitch to bring the count to 11-8.

Turner came to the plate for the second time in the frame with the bases loaded and raked a two-strike, two-run single to center to bring the Lions within one. After an error allowed the inning to continue, Mont Alto pitcher Caleb Cawthorn threw wide of first on a pick-off attempt, yielding the game-tying run as Massung crossed home.

Noah Walker (Bremen, Ga./Bremen) retired Mont Alto in order during the top of the eighth inning, Brandywine's first 1-2-3 inning of the day, to setup the walk-off victory during the bottom of the frame.

Mike DeGirolamo (Frederick, Md./Frederick) reached safely via throwing error and pinch runner Daniel Horowitz (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) used a balk and wild pitch to advance to third with one out. Massung drove a two-strike single through the drawn-in infield to score Horowitz with the game-winning run to complete the rally.

Turner, Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) all had two hits to lead the Lions' offense. Turner drove in four runs, while Shade produced three RBI.

Walker recorded a pair of strikeouts and earned the win in his collegiate debut. Logan Bartels (Cooper City, Fla./Cooper City) and Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) also produced scoreless relief appearances for the Lions.

Game One: Penn State Mont Alto 12, Penn State Brandywine 1

DeGirolamo's 100th career hit highlighted the game one setback for the Lions. He laced the first pitch he saw during his first at-bat through the middle of the infield to become the 13th member of Brandywine's 100-hit club.

Kursman drove in Brandywine's lone run, scoring Brown with a double during the third inning. Kursman registered two of the Lions' five hits.

Mont Alto collected 15 hits and scored during each of the first six innings to claim the victory.

Brandywine (1-1) is back in action at Maple Zone on Sunday when the Lions host Anna Maria College for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
