Chargers Outlast Brandywine In United East Doubleheader
ASTON, Pa. – Lancaster Bible held off Penn State Brandywine to win both games of a United East Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday night. The Chargers claimed game one by a 7-6 score in 10 innings before completing the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in game two.
Game One: Lancaster Bible 7, Penn State Brandywine 6 (10 innings)
The teams battled back-and-forth before Lancaster Bible held off the Lions for a 7-6, 10-inning victory to begin the day.
Tied 3-3 in the 10th, a two-out error allowed LBC to take the lead. Two hits followed for the Chargers as the visitors tacked on three insurance runs.
Brandywine battled back during the bottom of the frame, putting the game-winning run on base with two outs. Owen Lawton (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) doubled in Evan Shade (Green Lane, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) to begin the Lions' comeback bid. Ryan Brown's (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) sacrifice fly made the count 7-5 and Lawton crossed home via error to cut the deficit to one. The Lions later had two runners on base with two outs, but a fly out to center field ended the game.
Brandywine recorded the game's first run during the opening inning when Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) walked and crossed home on Mike DeGirolamo's (Frederick, Md./Frederick) base hit.
After LBC tied the score in the sixth, Brandywine immediately went back on top during the bottom of the frame as Brown's two-out single pushed Shade across the plate.
The Chargers took the lead in the eighth, but Brandywine again had a response. Brown's sacrifice fly was deep enough to allow Shade to score the game-tying run.
Snyder and Lawton both tallied two hits, while Brown drove in three runs and Shade scored three times to pace the Lions' offense.
Gianni Serenelli (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) worked the first seven-plus innings on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out six. Nate Romberger (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen School) fanned three and yielded four unearned runs on four hits in relief.
Game Two: Lancaster Bible 5, Penn State Brandywine 3
The Chargers completed the sweep by edging the Lions 5-3 in the nightcap.
After LBC built a two-run lead entering the bottom of the third inning, Brown singled and Snyder followed with a double that plated Brown, trimming the margin in half.
The Chargers tacked on two runs in the sixth and another marker in the eight to expand their lead to 5-1.
Brandywine got two runs back during the bottom of the eighth. Shawn Webb's (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) pinch-hit single pushed Daniel Horowitz (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) across the plate and one batter later, Shade lined a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Ryan Koman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) to score; however, that is as close as the Lions would get as Noah Robinette retired the Brandywine in order in the ninth inning.
Three Brandywine pitchers combined to strikeout 11 Chargers. Liam Nugent (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) fanned four in 4.0 innings, while allowing two runs and was charged with the loss. Noah Walker (Bremen, Ga./Bremen) also notched four strikeouts during the next 2.1 frames, while Ty Coccia (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) retired three Chargers via strikeout over the final 2.2 innings.
Brown and Snyder both added two hits to aid the offense.
Brandywine will play its final non-conference games of the spring on Sunday at Rosemont beginning at 3:00 PM.
