Wilson Bests Brandywine In First United East Doubleheader

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped both ends of its first-ever United East Conference doubleheader, falling by scores of 14-4 and 9-2 at Wilson College on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Wilson 14, Penn State Brandywine 4

Brandywine could not overcome an early six-run deficit as the Phoenix claimed the day's opener 14-4.

Wilson took advantage of five first-inning walks and recorded three hits to build a 6-0 edge through one inning.

The Lions trimmed the margin to 6-2 in the top of the fifth as Jamey Massung (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) started the frame with a base hit and scored on Daniel Rohlsen's (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) groundout. One batter later, Miguel Rodriguez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) doubled in Daniel Horowitz (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) with the Lions' second run.

The Phoenix answered with three runs on five hits during the bottom of the frame to push the margin to 9-2.

Rohlsen added a RBI single in the sixth and David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) walked and used two wild pitches to cross home in the seventh to provide Brandywine's final two runs.

Shawn Webb (Drexel Hill, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) produced two singles, while Rohlsen collected a hit and two RBI.

Game Two: Wilson 9, Penn State Brandywine 2

Brandywine scored two runs during the top of the first inning, but couldn't muster any further offense as the Phoenix plated the final nine runs in their 9-2 victory.

Brandywine's offense started strong during the opening frame as Horowitz tallied a one-out base hit and came around to score on Mike DeGirolamo's (Frederick, Md./Frederick) double. Kursman followed with a single that plated DeGirolamo, giving the Lions a 2-0 edge.

Wilson countered with three runs during the bottom half of the frame and added insurance runs in four consecutive inning beginning with a two-out run in the fourth.

After tallying three hits during the first inning, the Lions were limited to one knock the rest of the way against three Wilson pitchers, a Rohlsen base hit in the seventh inning. Rohlsen also worked a walk and stole a base in three plate appearances.

Gianni Serenelli (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) struck out six Phoenix batters, but allowed six runs on five hits in 5.0 innings and suffered the loss.

Brandywine wraps up a busy week Sunday with a doubleheader at Penn State York beginning at noon.
