Strong Pitching Leads Brandywine To Road Sweep Of Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) did not allow an earned run in a 3-1 game one victory, while Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) spun a three-hit shutout during a 8-0 game two triumph as the Penn State Brandywine softball team swept Haverford on Tuesday.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 3, Haverford 1

Lewandowski went the distance to earn her sixth win in seven starts this season during the opener. Lewandowski limited the Fords to one unearned run and five hits, while striking out one.

Brandywine struck first with a pair of runs off the bat of Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) during the top of the second inning. After Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) tripled and Jordan DuBois (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) worked a walk, Culbertson drove in both runners with a single through the middle of the infield for a 2-0 Lions' lead.

The Fords got a run back in the third, but Brandywine tacked on an insurance marker in the sixth inning. Culbertson reached via error, moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on Anna Caporale's (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) groundout to push the Lions' edge back to two runs.

After cruising through six innings, Lewandowski worked out of a jam in the seventh. Two runners stood in scoring position with no outs, but a line-drive double play to DuBois erased the runner at third base and Lewandowski got a popup to second base to end the game.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, Haverford 0 (5 innings)

Hurta twirled the first complete-game shutout of her career, yielding just three hits in 5.0 innings in the circle. She struck out four batters, while upping her record this spring to 4-2.

Hurta got all of the run support she would need in the second inning as Brandywine struck for seven runs on seven hits, while sending 11 batters to the plate. Rivera, Quinn Rosario (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) all delivered RBI singles to make the count 3-0. Ava Craddock (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) drove in two runs with a bases-loaded base hit and Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) capped the frame with a two-run double.

The Lions tacked on one more score in the fourth when Bussenger singled and scored on Kaylee Mushinski's (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) ground ball.

Bussenger and DeCillis both recorded two hits, while Craddock posted two RBI and stole a base to pace the offense.

Brandywine (10-4) hosts Delaware Valley for a doubleheader Thursday at Maple Zone beginning at 3:00 PM.
