Brandywine Earns Split With Washington College

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine won game one by a 5-0 score, but Washington College recorded the split of the non-conference softball doubleheader by winning the nightcap 10-7 on Wednesday evening.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 5, Washington College 0

Washington College could not solve April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton), who spun her third complete-game shutout of the season in the 5-0, game one victory.

Lewandowski collected a pair of strikeouts and yielded just three hits, while allowing only one Shorewoman base runner to reach scoring position. She retired the side in order in four-of-seven innings.

Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest), Emma McElroy (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) and Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) all recorded two hits for the Lions. Rivera produced three runs batted in, while Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored twice.

Rivera's two-run double plated Culbertson and McElroy to give Brandywine a 2-0 edge through two frames.

McElroy singled, swiped second and scored on Ava Craddock's (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) ground out in third before the Lions tacked on two more runs one frame later. Rivera used a triple to score Culbertson and came around to score on Quinn Rosario's (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) sacrifice fly.

Game Two: Washington College 10, Penn State Brandywine 7

Game two was a slugfest as both teams collected 14 hits, but the Shorewomen took advantage of a pair of Brandywine errors to record the twin bill split.

Run-scoring singles from McElroy and Rosario accounted for Brandywine's two runs, but the Lions trailed 7-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. DeCillis brought Brandywine two runs closer with a double and later came around to score on Rivera's groundball to make the count 7-5 after five frames.

The Shorewomen added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh before Brandywine mounted a rally during its final at-bat. Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) led off with a single and came around to score on Craddock's double. After a DeCillis base hit, Culbertson lifted a sacrifice fly to allow Craddock to score. The Lions brought the game-tying run to the plate with one out, but a runner thrown out on the base paths and a ground out to the pitcher's circle ended the threat.

McElroy added three more hits in game two, while Mushinski, Craddock and DeCillis all had two hits. Mushinski also scored a pair of runs.

Brandywine (18-6, 6-0) returns to conference play Sunday when the Lions visit Penn College at 1:00 PM.
