Brandywine Claims First Fall Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's tennis team defeated Penn State Berks by a 3-1 score to claim its first victory of the fall on Saturday afternoon. The Lion men were topped 6-0 by Berks.
 
After the teams split a pair of doubles bouts, Brandywine earned the win by claiming three-of-four singles matches.
 
Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), who teamed with Isabella Dolce (Media, Pa./Penncrest) to win 6-2 in doubles action, eased to a top-flight singles triumph by identical 6-0, 6-0 counts.
 
Sydney Mabry (Washington, D.C./Jackson-Reed) and Mari Gvelesiani (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) also recorded singles wins. Mabry won a pair of tiebreaks to register a 7-6, 7-6 triumph at No. 3, while Gvelesiani bounced back from dropping the first set, 4-6, to win the final two frames, 6-4, 6-4.
 
On the men's side, Elias Danesh (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) won three games, but was downed 1-6, 2-6 at No. 3 singles, while Mateo Torres (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and Aaron Wilson (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) each won two games during their respective singles bouts.
 
Brandywine is back at home on Wednesday, October 15 to host Division II Virginia State at 1:00 PM.
