Brandywine Splits Final Home Matches

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine women's tennis team secured a spot in the United East Conference Tournament following a 6-1 victory over Penn State Abington on Saturday, while the Lion men were defeated by the same count by Abington during the final home match of the regular season for both teams.

Brandywine won two-of-three doubles matches to secure the women's doubles point before claiming five of the six singles bouts.

Sydney Mabry (Washington, D.C./Jackson-Reed) and Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Brandywine claimed No. 3 doubles by default.

Zahran rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 singles triumph. Mari Gvelesiani (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3, while Sofia Guzman (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Berchmans) and Hope Priemon (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) also won in straight sets. Guzman was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 4 and Priemon claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5.

Mateo Torres' (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) victory highlighted singles action for the Lions. Torres claimed a 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 2. Patrick McGuire (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) won five games at No. 5, but fell 1-6, 4-6, while Elias Danesh (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) won three games during his top-flight singles match.

Von Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./String Theory) and Zairus Silverio (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) recorded a doubles victory for the Lions by a 6-4 count, but Abington won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn the doubles point.

Brandywine travels to Cairn Tuesday for 3:00 PM matches.
