Cairn Holds Off Brandywine 5-2

MEDIA, Pa. -- Cairn University claimed a pair of 5-2 victories over Penn State Brandywine during United East Conference men's and women's tennis matches on Wednesday afternoon.
 
On the women's side, Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) dropped the first set 1-6, but bounced back to win her top-flight singles match by capturing the second and third frames by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
 
Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy) picked up Brandywine's second point of the afternoon, also winning in three sets. Piccirillo won the opening frame 6-3 and after dropping the second, 3-6, earned the No. 4 singles triumph by a 6-4 count.
 
Aerynne Mays (Easton, Pa./Wilson) went the distance during her No. 3 singles match, dropping a 7-6, 3-6, 0-6 decision. Mays and Zahran also won six games at No. 1 doubles, but were downed 7-6.
 
The Brandywine men also recorded a pair of singles victories.
 
Matteo Cousineau (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) won in straight sets at No. 2 by scores of 7-5, 6-4. 
 
Jonathan Parsons (Wallingford, Pa.) captured a No. 3 singles triumph in three sets. He dropped the first frame 3-6 before recording back-to-back 7-6 sets to win the match. Parsons and Raj Mamidala (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) during doubles action, but fell 5-7.
 
The Brandywine men host Williamson Monday at 3:30 PM, while the women are idle until Tuesday when the Lions travel to Bryn Athyn at 3:00 PM.
