Brandywine Splits Tri-Match; Claims United East Win

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team won its conference-opening match, sweeping Cedar Crest (25-11, 25-23, 26-24), before dropping a 3-0 (12-25, 22-25, 22-25) decision to Washington College, as the Lions split a tri-match on Saturday.

Brandywine 3, Cedar Crest 0

Emma O'Reilly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the way offensively with nine kills, while Emmalin Molinaro (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy) both notched seven kills. Molinaro added three aces, matching Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) for the team lead, and Shayla Howell (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) handed out 12 assists.

O'Reilly also produced a team-high 13 digs, while Aaliyna Patel (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) collected 12. Piccirillo and Morgan Rizer (Denton, Md./North Caroline) both produced three blocks.

Kills from Piccirillo, Molinaro and Rizer and a pair of O'Reilly aces fueled a match-opening 5-1 run for the Lions. Brandywine steadily increased its lead, pushing the margin as large as 14 points three times, before cruising to the 25-11 first-set victory.

Brandywine had to put together a late rally to claim the second frame. Trailing 22-20, a Cedar Crest error helped to jumpstart a Lions' surge. Following the miscue, Piccirillo and O'Reilly set down consecutive kills to put Brandywine on top, 23-22. The Falcons tied the score, but an error and a kill from Nia Moore (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) gave the set to Brandywine.

The teams swapped the lead five times during the third set before a run of three-straight points put Brandywine on top 24-21. The Lions had two opportunities at match point, but the hosts rallied with three consecutive markers to tie the count at 24-all. A serving error gave the lead back to Brandywine and Rizer finished off the sweep with an ace.

Washington College 3, Penn State Brandywine 0

The Lions got out to a slow start during their second match of the day, dropping the opening frame 25-12, but rebounded in the second set. Brandywine led 21-20 following Howell's ace; however, the Shorewomen recorded four of the final five points in the stanza to open up a 2-0 edge in the match.

Neither team led by more than three points during the final set before three-straight Washington markers put the Shorewomen on top 24-20. Brandywine staved off two match points thanks to Washington errors, but a kill from Gianna Folke ended the match in straight sets.

O'Reilly and Piccirillo tied for the team lead with five kills, while Howell posted eight assists and Jezyk notched six. Patel collected a team-high 10 digs and O'Reilly and Jezyk both added nine. O'Reilly, Rizer and Moore all tallied three blocks.

Brandywine (6-6, 1-0 UEC) will open a three-match homestand Tuesday against Valley Forge at 7:00 PM.
