Brandywine Turns In Second-Straight Sweep

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team recorded its second victory via sweep in as many nights, downing Cheyney 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-23) on Wednesday evening.

Brandywine eased through the first set, winning 25-12. The Lions netted the first four points of the night, including a pair of aces from Emma O'Reilly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham). Brandywine pushed its lead to eight points at 18-10 and then pulled away as O'Reilly tacked on three more aces and Morgan Rizer (Denton, Md./North Caroline) produced two kills during a 6-0 run that put the set away.

The Lions allowed Cheyney to hang around early during the second frame before using an 8-1 surge, aided by kills from Emmalin Molinaro (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) and Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy), along with aces by O'Reilly and Ava De La Osa (Dania Beach, Fla./Nova), to take command. The Wolves trimmed the Lions' nine-point lead to just five, but Nia Moore's (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) kill, plus an ace from Molinaro and a Cheyney error, allowed Brandywine to claim the set and a 2-0 edge in the match.

Brandywine led the final frame by as many as five points before Cheyney rallied to grab a 20-16 advantage. A run of five-straight Brandywine points included kills from Rizer, Moore and Rachel Nice (Feasterville, Pa./St. Hubert's), allowing the Lions to vault back in front. After the teams swapped the next five points, Brandywine broke the 23-all deadlock with a kill from Rizer and a Cheyney error to finish off the sweep.

Moore posted a team-best nine kills, while Piccirillo added seven and Rizer notched six. Shayla Howell (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) registered 14 assists and Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) handed out 10. O'Reilly produced half of Brandywine's 18 aces, while Molinaro and Howell both set down three aces.

Defensively, O'Reilly collected 11 digs to pace the Lions. Molinaro added six digs, while De La Osa, Jezyk, Howell and Aaliyna Patel (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) all notched five.

Brandywine (8-6, 2-0) plays its third home match of the week Saturday against Lancaster Bible beginning at 11:00 AM.
