Brandywine Posts Senior Day Sweep

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine celebrated Senior Day by sweeping Penn State Abington 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) to claim a United East Conference volleyball victory on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine received a career-high 10 kills from Emmalin Molinaro (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex), while Emma O'Reilly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) posted nine and Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy) notched eight. Shayla Howell (Newark, Del./St. George's Tech) dished out 27 assists and had four service aces.

Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth), the team's lone senior, collected three of the Lions' 16 aces and added six digs and three assists. O'Reilly tallied seven aces, while Molinaro registered two.

The first set was closely contested with neither team leading by more than two points until an Abington error and an O'Reilly kill put the Lions on top 20-16. The visitors got one point back, but kills by Nia Moore (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) and Molinaro sandwiched a pair of O'Reilly aces as Brandywine reached set point. Molinaro put the first set away with a kill as Brandywine claimed a 1-0 edge in the match.

Abington used a run of eight-straight points to open up a 16-8 edge during the second set, but the Lions stormed back. A pair of Abington miscues and a Piccirillo kill brought the deficit to five. The visitors pushed the margin back to six points at 20-14; however, Brandywine answered with seven-straight points to vault into the lead. O'Reilly started the run with a kill and after another O'Reilly kill, plus a kill from Moore, Jezyk finished off the surge with consecutive aces. Abington tied the count at 21-all, but Brandywine scored four of the next five points, capped by an O'Reilly kill, to win the second frame.

Molinaro and Piccirillo combined for three kills to help the Lions begin the final set with six consecutive points. Abington trimmed the margin to just one at 19-18, but the Lions held on as Howell's ace completed the sweep.

Howell, Molinaro, O'Reilly and Ava De La Osa (Dania Beach, Fla./Nova) tied for the team lead with nine digs, while Morgan Rizer (Denton, Md./North Caroline) topped the Lions with three blocks.

Brandywine (11-10, 5-3), which dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision to Abington in September, will play its final road match of the regular season on Tuesday when the Lions visit Keystone at 7:00 PM.
