William Paterson Tops Brandywine In Season Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- William Paterson University spoiled Penn State Brandywine's men's soccer season opener, claiming a 6-0 victory on the Lions' home field Saturday afternoon.

Matty Escobar put the visiting Pioneers on the board just 2:38 into the match, his first of two goals on the day. William Paterson tacked on three more goals during the next 31 minutes to build a 4-0 edge at halftime.

The visitors netted a goals during the 63rd and 80th minutes to account for the final margin.

Brandywine, which lost its season-opening match for the first time since 2019, recorded a pair of shots on goal, both coming off the foot of Ayobami Kuponiyi (Havertown, Pa./Bonner-Prendie). Kuponiyi delivered the top scoring chance of the match for the Lions late in the first half, but his free kick from just outside the penalty area was turned aside by WPU goalkeeper Luca Misko.

Making his collegiate debut, Braden Warwick (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) played all 90 minutes in net for the Lions. He stopped 10 shots, while Misko made two saves for the Pioneers.

Brandywine is back at home Thursday to host Penn State Schuylkill at 4:00 PM.
