Brandywine Extends Program-Record Winning Streak To 14-Straight Games
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine softball team swept Delaware Valley University by scores of 8-2 and 2-1 on Thursday afternoon as the Lions won for the 13th- and 14th-straight outings, setting a new program record-long winning streak. Brandywine previously won 13 consecutive games from April 21-May 18, 2023.
Game One: Penn State Brandywine 8, Delaware Valley 2
Brandywine built a 7-0 lead through four innings and did not look back as the Lions won 8-2 in the day's opening game.
A first-inning error allowed Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) to score a run, while Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) singled, stole second and scored on Mushinski's groundout to double the margin in the third inning.
Five more runs came around to score in the fourth. Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) drove in a run with a single. Mushinski and Emma McElroy (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) combined to knock in three more with back-to-back doubles, while Ava Rodgers (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) capped the frame with a run-scoring base hit.
Mushinski singled and scored via error to complete the scoring in the seventh. She led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort, while knocking in two runs and scoring three times. McElroy knocked in two runs and Bussenger crossed home twice and stole a base.
April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) went the distance for the second-straight day, upping her record to 10-2 on the season. She struck out six, while allowing two runs on eight hits.
Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 2, Delaware Valley 1
Two runs were all Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) would need as she limited DelVal to one run in a complete-game effort to finish off the Brandywine sweep.
Hurta set a season-high with six strikeouts, while scattering nine hits, to improve to 6-4 this spring. She worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh by rolling a 5-2-3 double play to end the game.
Mushinski provided all of the offense by launching her fourth home run in the last seven games, a two-run shot during the third inning, after Rivera walked to lead off the frame.
Brandywine was limited to just four hits, including two off the bat of McElroy.
Brandywine (21-7, 10-0 UEC) will play for the third-straight day when the Lions host Lancaster Bible for Senior Day Friday beginning at 1:00 PM.
