Brandywine Clinches Top Seed In United East Tournament

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine will be the No. 1 seed when the United East Conference Softball Tournament begins next week after the Lions finished the regular season undefeated in league play following a sweep at Keystone on Friday afternoon. Brandywine won both games via run rule by scores of 8-0 and 9-1.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 8, Keystone 0

Brandywine scored three times in the first and five more runs in the third and April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) eased to her fourth shutout of the season in the opener.

Lewandowski allowed one hit and just three base runners overall as she improved to 14-2 on the season. She struck out seven Giants and needed just 60 pitches to get through all five innings.

Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) doubled, stole third and scored on Emma McElroy's (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) single to put Brandywine on the board in the first. After McElroy swiped second, Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) pushed her across the plate with a base hit. Mushinski later scored on Ava Rodgers' (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) groundout to make the count 3-0.

McElroy led off the third inning with her fifth home run of the season and Mushinski put the very next pitch over the fence as she went deep for the ninth time this spring.

Olivia Bowers (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Rodgers, while Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) scored via error and Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) crossed home on Naya Rivera's (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) grounder to complete the scoring.

McElroy and Mushinski both tallied two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Culbertson added a pair of knocks.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 9, Keystone 1

Brandywine completed its first undefeated conference slate since 2015 with a 9-1 victory in game two.

The Lions scored during each of their first four at-bats, including three-run first and second frames.

DeCillis knocked in the first two runs of the opening inning with a double and came around to score two batters later on Jordan DuBois' (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) two-out triple.

Valentina Capra (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) tripled in a run and scored on Bussenger's two-base hit to begin the second inning. Mushinski added a run with a groundout, plating Mila Gorres (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby).

Culbertson singled and scored on Sam Gonchar's (Brick Township, N.J./Monroe Township) groundout to account for the Lions' third inning run. DeCillis put the game away with her second home run of the spring, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning.

Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) yielded a first inning run to the Giants, but nothing more, to earn the win in the circle. Hurta recorded five strikeouts, while scattering six hits.

DeCillis tallied a pair of hits and drove in four of Brandywine's nine runs, while Bussenger and Culbertson both added a two knocks.

Brandywine (29-7, 16-0 UEC), winner of 22-straight games, will face an opponent still to be determined on Friday, May 1 for the first two games of a best-of-three series in the second round of the United East Tournament.
