Lewandowski Perfect In Brandywine’s Second-Round Sweep

ASTON, Pa. -- April Lewandowski (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) spun the second perfect game in Penn State Brandywine history as the top-seeded Lions rolled to a two-game sweep of No. 9 Cedar Crest in the second round of the United East Conference Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon. Lewandowski was perfect during an 8-0 opening-game victory, while Brandywine claimed game two by a 13-1 count.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 8, Cedar Crest 0

Lewandowski, who no-hit the Falcons during the regular season, tossed Brandywine's first perfect game since Apr. 9, 2017 when Grace DeRosa was perfect in a win over Penn State Wilkes Barre. She struck out 10 batters, one shy of a career high, including a run of eight-straight Falcons from the first through fourth innings.

Fifty-one of 71 pitches went for strikes for Lewandowski, who allowed just one ball to leave the infield, a game-ending lineout to center field stabbed by Emma McElroy (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston), as she upped her record on the season to 15-2.

Brandywine's offense supplied Lewandowski with plenty of support, putting five runs on the board in the second inning before adding three more in the fourth. McElroy and Lexi Bussenger (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) both recorded two hits and stole a base to lead the offense.

Run-scoring doubles from Bussenger and Jordan DuBois (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) gave Brandywine a 2-0 second inning edge. After McElroy pushed another run across with a groundout, Kaylee Mushinski (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) added a RBI double and Ava Rodgers (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) followed with a base hit to score Mushinski.

Bussenger singled, stole second and scored on McElroy's triple to begin the fourth inning. Rodgers dropped down a squeeze bunt to add another run, while Shelby DeCillis (Iselin, N.J./Colonia) completed the scoring with a RBI double.

Brandywine collected nine hits overall, including five that went for extra bases.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 13, Cedar Crest 1

A nine-run first inning was all Brandywine would need to complete the sweep with a 13-1 game two victory.

Brandywine produced six hits and took advantage of three walks, while sending 13 batters to the plate during the opening frame. Bussenger swiped a pair of bases before scoring via error to get the Lions on the board. Mushinski doubled in McElroy and later came around to score on DeCillis' squeeze bunt. Naya Rivera (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest), Valentina Capra (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) and McElroy added run-scoring singles, while Mushinski capped the frame with a bases-clearing triple.

Nine runs of support was more than enough for Isabella Hurta (Colts Neck, N.J./Red Bank Catholic), who cruised through five innings to earn her ninth win of the season. Hurta struck out five, while limiting Cedar Crest to one run on two hits.

Brandywine completed its scoring in the second inning. DeCillis led off the frame with her third home run of the season, while Madie Culbertson (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored via error and McElroy lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Mushinski notched her fifth RBI of the game with a base hit that plated Rivera.

Mushinski was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Culbertson and Rivera both tallied two hits. McElroy, Culbertson and Rivera all scored twice and Capra, DeCillis and McElroy each drove in a pair of runs.

As the No. 1 seed, Brandywine (31-7) will host the final round of the United East Tournament beginning next Friday at Neumann University.
