Brandywine Unable To Overcome Early Deficit In Setback At Haverford
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford built a 17-point lead through one quarter and held on to defeat the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team 75-56 on Wednesday night.
The Fords made 11 of their 19 first-quarter field goal attempts and used an 18-0 surge midway through the period to build a 27-10 edge after 10 minutes.
Brandywine battled back in the second quarter, outscoring Haverford 19-11. After trailing by as many as 21 points, the Lions used an 11-0 run, aided by points from four scorers, to close within 31-21. Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) capped the run with a triple at the 5:36 mark and just under three minutes later, sank a free throw to get Brandywine within eight.
Haverford held a nine-point edge at intermission before pulling away from Brandywine late in the third period. Cassidy Tolbert (Austell, Ga./Pebblebrook) sank a free throw to make the score 49-40 with 4:32 to go, but that would be Brandywine's final point of the quarter as Haverford closed the third with a 13-0 run.
Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) recorded her second 20-point game of the season, pouring in a career-high 22 points, on 10-of-16 shooting. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) contributed 10 points and three assists, while Allen notched seven points and three helpers.
Brandywine (1-8, 0-3 United East) will be on the road again Saturday when the Lions visit Widener at 1:00 PM.
