Abington Pulls Away Late To Top Brandywine
MEDIA, Pa. – Penn State Abington outscored Penn State Brandywine 45-28 during the second half to pull away with an 83-63 United East Conference women's basketball victory on Wednesday night.
Brandywine got out to a slow start, falling behind 12-1 in the early minutes, but rallied to within four by the end of the opening quarter. The Lions closed the stanza with six of the last seven points, capped by a Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) layup, to make the count 21-17.
The visitors continued to hold a four-point lead four minutes into the second quarter before a basket and two free throws from Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) tied the score. Twenty second later, Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) converted a three-point play to put the Lions on top for the first time.
Brandywine led by as many as three points, but Abington responded with a 10-0 surge to vault back in front. Watson canned a jumper and Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) followed with two free throws to trim Brandywine's deficit to 38-35 at halftime.
Brandywine continued its run into the second half as Allen completed a spurt of seven-straight points to push the Lions in front 42-38; however, Abington countered by netting 13 consecutive points to establish a nine-point edge.
The visitors extended the margin to 12 points after 30 minutes and continued to pull away during the final period, never letting Brandywine close the gap to fewer than 10 points.
Allen poured in a team-high 17 points and pulled in seven rebounds, while Watson contributed 14 points and matched Kemp with a team-best nine boards. Kemp added 10 points and blocked six shots, two shy of the program's single-game record, and Koger notched 11 points and five boards.
Brandywine limited Abington to 34 percent shooting, including a 6-of-25 mark from beyond the arc, but was marred by 22 turnovers.
Brandywine (1-16, 0-9 UEC) visits Bryn Athyn Saturday for a 1:00 PM matchup.
