Brandywine Drops Final Game Of Road Trip
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team dropped the final game of a three-game road trip as the Lions were defeated 62-49 by Wilson College on Tuesday night.
Brandywine ran out to an early four-point lead and held a 12-11 edge through one quarter after holding Wilson to 3-of-16 shooting from the field.
Neither team held a lead of more than three during the first eight minutes of the second period as the squads swapped the lead back-and-forth. The Lions claimed a 21-19 edge following Trinell Watson's (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) layup at the 4:48 mark, but the Phoenix answered with eight of the next nine points. Sierra Diawara's (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) jumper with eight seconds remaining in the half brought Brandywine within three at the break.
Watson, Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) and Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) combined for the first six points of the second half, vaulting Brandywine back in front 30-27. The hosts made a late run, outscoring Brandywine 8-2 during the final three minutes of the third period to claim a 41-34 edge after 30 minutes.
Wilson added five points to its lead early in the fourth; however, Brandywine stormed back to tie the game thanks to a 12-0 surge. Diawara and Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) got the run started with consecutive baskets. Watson followed with five-straight points and Allen added a bucket before Watson's free throw at the 4:36 mark capped the run by knotting the count at 46-all.
Wilson answered the Lions' run with four-straight points before Allen made the score 50-48 with a layup. Allen's basket was the final field goal of the game for the Lions as Wilson closed the contest with a 12-1 run. The Phoenix scored six points during a span of 41 seconds to extend their lead to eight points and secured the victory with four free throws during the final 1:44.
Allen led the scoring effort with 16 points, while Diawara added 13 points, three steals and three blocked shots. Watson tallied 10 points and Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Brandywine (1-14, 0-7 UEC) will play six of its next eight games at home beginning Saturday against Keystone at 1:00 PM.
