Third-Quarter Run Propels St. Elizabeth Past Brandywine
MORRISTOWN, N.J. – St. Elizabeth scored the first nine points of the second half to break the game open and knocked off the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team 69-53 on Wednesday night.
The Eagles claimed a 16-10 edge through 10 minutes and held a lead as large as eight points early in the second period, but Brandywine rallied quickly. Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) and Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) knocked down back-to-back three-pointers and Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) added a bucket to complete an 8-0 run that spanned just 64 seconds, tying the count at 18-all.
Another Diawara triple briefly gave Brandywine a one-point edge at the 2:47 mark of the second quarter before the Eagles netted six of the final nine points to take a 34-32 edge into intermission.
St. Elizabeth connected on four of its first five field goal attempts of the second half, outscoring Brandywine 9-0 during the opening 1:35 of the third period.
A three-pointer from Taylor Mims (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) cut the Lions' margin to just eight near the mid-point of the third quarter, but SEU responded with four-straight points and the Eagles led by double figures the rest of the way.
Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) made all seven of her free throw attempts and led the Lions with 13 points. Diawara added 11 points, while Allen and Koger both notched 10 points. Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) paced the rebounding effort with seven boards.
Brandywine (1-12, 0-5 UEC) will be on the road again Saturday when the Lions visit Penn College at 1:00 PM.
