Brandywine Falls At Bryn Athyn
BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Bryn Athyn scored a 61-49 United East Conference women's basketball victory over Penn State Brandywine on Saturday.
Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) netted a team-high 13 points. Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) collected 11 points and five steals and Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) grabbed seven rebounds.
Diawara and Koger combined for eight of Brandywine's 10 first-quarter points, but Bryn Athyn tallied the final five points of the period to build a 13-10 edge through 10 minutes.
An Allen three-pointer and two free throws from Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) handed the Lions a two-point lead early in the second quarter; however, the hosts answered with a 10-2 run. Bryn Athyn closed the first half by netting eight-straight points during the final two minutes to lead 31-20 at the break.
Brandywine held Bryn Athyn scoreless for the first 3:24 of the second half and trimmed the margin to just six thanks to another Allen triple and a Koger layup. Zhymani Smith's three-point play ended Bryn Athyn's scoring drought and started a 12-3 surge for the hosts as BAC built its biggest lead of the day during the final minutes of the third period at 43-28.
The Lions cut their deficit as low as seven points when Koger canned a triple with 2:38 to play in regulation, but Bryn Athyn netted five free throws in the final 2:04 to hold on for the win.
Brandywine held BAC without a make on nine three-point attempts, but the hosts held a 40-20 scoring edge in the paint and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds. The Lions shot 31 percent from the field, including a 5-of-12 mark from three-point range.
Brandywine will play four of its next five games on its home court beginning Tuesday versus Lancaster Bible at 5:30 PM.
