Neumann Tops Brandywine In Season Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine dropped a 60-47 decision to crosstown rival Neumann University in the women's basketball season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

After trailing 11-7 through one quarter, Journey Handy (Delmar, Md./Delmarva Christian) buried a triple to open the second period, bringing the Lions within one; however, Neumann answered with a 12-0 run during the next six minutes to seize control of the game.

The Knights' lead swelled to 13 points with 1:48 to go in the first half before Brandywine battled back, climbing within eight following Taylor Mims' (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) layup just over one minute later. A pair of Neumann free throws sent the Knights into intermission with a 10-point advantage.

The visitors pulled away during the third quarter, using an 11-0 surge to build a 41-22 lead. Brandywine's defense clamped down on the Knights during the period's final three minutes, forcing seven turnovers as the Lions closed within 11. Four different players accounted for a basket as Brandywine closed the quarter with eight-straight points to make the count 41-30.

Ashley Robinson's (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson) jumper 14 seconds into the final stanza cut the Lions' deficit to nine, but that is as close as Brandywine would get. Neumann countered with a 12-2 run spanning four minutes to take command.

Robinson and Tejanae Ballin (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) tied for the team lead with nine points in their respective college debuts. Ballin topped the team in rebounding with seven boards, while Robinson paired six rebounds with three assists and four steals.

Brandywine was limited to 22 percent shooting from the field, while Neumann shot 34 percent and knocked down 24-of-32 free throws.

Brandywine (0-1) visits Alvernia for its first road test of the season Monday at 6:00 PM.
