Big Second Half Lifts Cheyney Past Brandywine

MEDIA, Pa. -- Cheyney scored the first 13 points of the second half en route to defeating the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team by a score of 81-41 on Tuesday night.

Brandywine trimmed an early five-point deficit to just one after 10 minutes following back-to-back buckets from Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Rayne Manson (Dayton, Ohio/Dunbar)

The Wolves netted the second period's first six points and expanded their lead to eight by the mid-point of the quarter. The Lions answered with seven-straight points as Destiny Johnson (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) and Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) sandwiched layups around a Caroline Messick (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Merion Mercy) triple. Cheyney outscored the Lions 10-4 during the final 3:48 of the half to bring a 35-28 edge into intermission.

The second half belonged to Cheyney. The visitors scored 13-straight points to begin the third stanza and outscored Brandywine 23-5 overall during the period to build a 58-33 lead. The Wolves never let the lead dip below 25 points during the final quarter.

Kemp led the Lions with seven points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Manson, Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown), Tejanae Ballin (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) and Cassidy Tolbert (Austell, Ga./Pebblebrook) all netted six points. Ballin also grabbed seven rebounds.
