Brandywine Comes Up Short Against Lancaster Bible

MEDIA, Pa. -- A late comeback bid from the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team came up short as Lancaster Bible held off the Lions by a 63-55 score on Wednesday night.

Both teams started hot offensively as Brandywine held a 12-8 edge through the game's first five minutes. LBC closed the opening period with 15 of the final 20 points to grab a 23-17 edge.

Journey Handy's (Delmar, Md./Delmarva Christian) three-pointer brought Brandywine within three exactly four miuntes into the second quarter, but the Chargers answered with five-straight points. The visitors held the Lions without a point for the final four minutes of the half to lead 34-25 at the break.

Brandywine was within four following a jumper from Taylor Mims (Yeadon, Pa./Penn Wood) at the 6:22 mark of the third stanza, but Lancaster Bible countered with an 11-0 surge during the next five minutes and held a 49-37 edge entering the final quarter.

LBC extended its lead to 13 points with 5:16 to go before Brandywine made a final charge. Ashley Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson) knocked down a triple, while Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Cassidy Tolbert (Austell, Ga./Pebblebrook) later added back-to-back baskets to trim the deficit to seven.

Robinson's layup at the 2:15 mark made the score 56-50 and after a Charger free throw, Kemp brought Brandywine within five with a bucket. Robinson netted three points in 12 seconds with a layup, steal and free throw to make the margin 59-55 with less than one minute to play; however, Brandywine could not get closer as LBC knocked down four free throws and held Brandywine off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Robinson poured in a career-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added a team-high seven rebounds and seven steals. Handy canned a trio of triples for nine points, while Mims contributed eight points.

Brandywine shot 40 percent from the field and limited LBC to 32 percent shooting, but the Chargers held a commanding 49-33 edge on the boards and knocked down 15 free throws, compared to just eight for the Lions.

Brandywine begins a three-game road trip Saturday at Cairn with tip-off slated for 3:00 PM.
