Brandywine Comes Up Short Against Harrisburg

MEDIA, Pa. -- The teams were tied 32-32 at halftime, but Penn State Harrisburg outscored Penn State Brandywine 38-21 during the final 20 minutes to claim a 70-53 United East Conference women's basketball victory late Wednesday night.
 
Brandywine held a 15-8 lead midway through the first quarter following a bucket from Jazmyn Kemp (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and a free throw from Trinell Watson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown). The visitors trimmed the margin to just three, but Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) knocked down two free throws and added a layup to extend the Lions' lead to 20-13 through 10 minutes.
 
Journey Handy's (Delmar, Md./Delmarva Christian) basket with 8:47 to go in the first half made the count 23-15; however, Harrisburg answered with nine-straight points to take its first lead of the night. The teams swapped the lead four times over the final final minutes of the period before Harrisburg's Brookelynn Carr beat the buzzer with a layup to tie the count at 32-all entering intermission.
 
Harrisburg took control of the game during the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 23-10. The visitors shot 8-for-12 from the field during the stanza and broke the game open following a 13-2 run that gave Harrisburg a 47-36 edge. Brandywine trimmed the deficit to seven points, but Harrisburg closed the period with eight of the final 10 points to build a 55-42 advantage.
 
The visitors held off Brandywine during the final 10 minutes as their lead never dipped below 13 points.
 
Watson led the Lions with 13 points and four assists, while Analise Sierra (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Cassidy Tolbert (Austell, Ga./Pebblebrook) notched eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Brandywine forced 26 Harrisburg turnovers, but the visitors commanded the boards, 52-37, and netted 36 points in the paint.
 
Brandywine (5-17, 4-6 UEC) hosts Cedar Crest for Senior Day Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM.
