Late Goal Sends Gwynedd Mercy Past Brandywine In Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- A Gwynedd Mercy goal during the 84th minute spoiled Penn State Brandywine's women's soccer season opener as the Griffins topped the Lions 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

A miscommunication by the Brandywine defense following a Griffin shot allowed Samantha Winco to net what turned out to be the game-winning goal at the 83:24 mark of the second half.

After conceeding a goal late in the first half, Brandywine equaled the count during the 74th minute. Emma Kearns' (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) initial shot was stopped by GMU keeper Natalie Gablein, but Hope Priemon (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was unmarked and followed the shot, tapping the ball into the back of the net for the 16th marker of her career.

In her Brandywine debut, Jasmin Alvarez (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) made 15 saves, while playing all 90 minutes. She stopped seven first-half shots and eight during the final 45 minutes.

Brandywine collected eight shots on goal, including two each from Kearns, Priemon and Addy Stanton (Henderson, Nev./Coronado).

Brandywine will look to bounce back Tuesday when the Lions visit Valley Forge at 4:00 PM.
