Brandywine Upends Berks In United East First Round

READING, Pa. – Seventh-seeded Penn State Brandywine upended No. 6 Penn State Berks by a 4-2 score as the Lions won their first-ever United East Conference Women's Tennis Tournament match on Wednesday afternoon.

Brandywine brought a 1-0 lead into singles play after claiming all three doubles matches. Sydney Mabry (Washington, D.C./Jackson-Reed) and Samma Zahran (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1, while Hailey Piccirillo (Broadlands, Va./Virginia Academy) and Madison Ferguson (Secane, Pa./Ridley) won by the same count at No. 3. Hope Priemon (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Natalie DiMario (Clifton Heights, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) won a tiebreak (7-5) in a 7-6 triumph at No. 2.

Zahran cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 during her top-flight singles bout. Mari Gvelesiani (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) earned a No. 3 singles win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to set the Lions up with a third point.

Priemon recorded the match-deciding point at No. 5. She held off Madelyn Caris 6-3, 7-5 to send Brandywine to the second round of the conference tournament.

Brandywine (7-8) will visit No. 3 Penn College on Saturday at the Central PA Tennis Center at 6:30 PM.
