Valley Forge Edges Brandywine 3-1

ASTON, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Valley Forge as the Patriots earned a split of the mid-week season series in United East Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

Two Brandywine pitchers limited the Patriots to one earned run on six hits, but a pair of errors allowed Valley Forge to take the lead for good during the fifth inning.

Jackson Messick (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) yielded a first-inning run via wild pitch before striking out a season-high eight batters over the next five innings. Matt Delacruz (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) relieved Messick in the sixth inning and did not allow a run on two hits, while striking out four batters.

Brandywine evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning as Ivano Romaniello (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) started the frame with a single, used two wild pitches to move to third base and later scored on David Kursman's (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) sacrifice fly.

Two hits and two Brandywine miscues allowed the Patriots to score twice during the fifth inning.

Brandywine threatened in the seventh when Kursman and Mason Coursey (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) registered back-to-back hits to start the inning, but Brandon Dalmado retired the next three hitters he faced to escape trouble.

Dalmado set down the final nine Brandywine batters in order to earn the win in a complete-game effort.

Romaniello, Kursman and Miguel Rodriguez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) all posted multi-hit performances, combining for six of Brandywine's eight hits.

Brandywine (11-12, 3-3 UEC) travels to Notre Dame of Maryland on Saturday for a United East doubleheader beginning at noon.
