Brandywine Tops Wilson 7-6 To Advance In United East Tournament

ASTON, Pa. -- Eighth-seeded Penn State Brandywine won its first-ever United East Conference Baseball Tournament game as the Lions rallied to top No. 9 Wilson by a score of 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

Brandywine overcame a four-error first inning that led to the Phoenix scoring four unearned runs off starter Gianni Serenelli (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic). Serenelli and the defense settled in after the opening frame as he yielded just one run on four hits during the next five innings. Serenelli struck out four, earning his first win of the season.

Two-out runs were key for the Lions, who plated six of their seven markers with two outs, including the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) started the two-out rally with a triple and came around to score when Noah Currier (New Castle, Del./William Penn) legged out an infield single to give the Lions the lead for good at 6-5.

Brandywine answered Wilson's four-run top of the first with a three spot during the bottom of the frame. Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) reached via error and later scored on a wild pitch to get Brandywine on the board. Jason Hankins (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) launched his team-high fourth home run of the spring, a long, two-run shot over the left field fence to make the count 4-3 through one frame.

The Phoenix added a run in the fifth, but Brandywine answered with two in its half of the frame to even the score. After Currier and Snyder recorded back-to-back singles to start the inning, Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) delivered a run-scoring base hit to plate Currier. Will Collison (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) brought the Lions even with a run-scoring ground ball two batters later.

After Currier's RBI single gave the Lions the lead in the sixth, Brandywine added an insurance marker one frame later as Daniel Rohlsen (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ivano Romaniello (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley).

Brandywine held a 7-5 edge entering the ninth inning following two scoreless innings on the mound from Matt Delacruz (Exton, Pa./West Chester East). Josh Hess (Panama City, Fla./Arnold) walked the first Phoenix batter he faced in the ninth, but Snyder stabbed a line drive and turned a double play to leave Wilson with one out remaining. A strikeout wild pitch, stolen base and run-scoring single brought Wilson to within one and sent the go-ahead run to the plate, but Hess fanned Derek Chevara to end the game, notching his fourth save of the season.

All nine players in the Brandywine lineup collected at least one hit as the Lions totaled 13 knocks. Brown, Romaniello, Collison and Currier all notched a pair of hits.

Brandywine (15-17-2) will begin a best-of-three series at No. 1 Keystone in the second round of the United East Tournament Friday with a pair of games beginning at 12:00 PM.
