Brandywine Wraps Up Regular Season At St. Mary’s
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Penn State Brandywine and St. Mary's closed out the United East Conference baseball regular season Friday afternoon. The Seahawks walked off with a 7-6 victory in game one and the teams tied 8-8 after St. Mary's field was deemed unplayable because of rain following six-plus innings of play in game two.
Game One: St. Mary's 7, Penn State Brandywine 6
Brandywine trailed 5-0, but rallied to take the lead before the Seahawks walked off a winner after scoring a run during the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Lions trailed 5-0 entering the third inning, but got a run back when Ryan Brown (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) singled in Noah Currier (New Castle, Del./William Penn).
Two frames later, Brandywine put five runs on the board to take the lead. Miguel Rodriguez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and David Kursman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) recorded back-to-back, bases-loaded singles to get the Lions within 5-3 before Daniel Rohlsen (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) unloaded the bases with a three-run double.
St Mary's plated a run in the sixth to tie the score at 6-6 and the count remained the same until the ninth inning when the Seahawks loaded the bases with one out. A groundball scored Eli Shafer with the game-winning run.
Ivano Romaniello (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) led the Lions with three hits, while Rohlsen tallied a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Ryan Snyder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) added two knocks and stole two bases.
Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 8, St. Mary's 8 (6 innings)
Brandywine scored four runs during the first and third innings, but St. Mary's rallied with the game's final six runs to force the tie.
Romaniello knocked in two runs with a single, while Jason Hankins (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) added a run-scoring double. Kursman's sacrifice fly scored Will Collison (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) to cap the four-run first inning.
Rohlsen doubled in Rodriguez and scored on Kursman's base hit to start a four-run third frame. Snyder scored Currier and Kursman with a single to make the count 8-2.
St. Mary's got four runs back in the fourth and tied the game with two markers in the sixth before the rain came in the top of the seventh inning.
All nine batters in Brandywine's order posted at least one hit, paced by Snyder's three-hit effort. Hankins and Rohlsen both added a pair of knocks.
Brandywine (14-17-2, 5-8-1 UEC) will learn its seed and opponent for the first round of the United East Tournament on Sunday following the conclusion of the league's regular-season schedule.
