Brandywine Caps Regular Season With Seventh-Straight Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day by defeating St. Mary's of Maryland 74-68 for its seventh-straight victory on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Brandywine matched its longest winning streak since 2006 and tied for a share of the United East regular-season title with Lancaster Bible and Cairn. Brandywine will be the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal game next Saturday evening.

Ja'bri White (Townsend, Del./St. Mark's) paired 16 points with 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Jaden Fogg (Morrisville, Pa./Morrisville) added 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Ahmaar Godhania (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.

The first half was tightly contested with the Lions holding a 33-29 through 20 minutes.

After St. Mary's trimmed the margin to one, Brandywine errupted for 10-straight points, aided by three buckets from White, to lead 43-32 at the 16:41 mark. Two minutes later, a layup from Corwin Holland II (Bowie, Md./Rock Creek Christian) extended the Lions' edge to 14 points. Ben Bass (Arlington, Va./Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School) gave Brandywine its largest lead of the day at 60-44 by knocking down a triple at the 11:09 mark.

Brandywine continued to hold a commanding lead, pushing in front 65-49 with 5:35 remaining, but the Seahawks came storming back during the final minutes.

The visitors netted nine-straight points during the next 2:11 to climb within seven and trailed by just five with 1:23 to play. After White made 1-of-2 free throws, Bryan Warren (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) added a basket for an eight-point Brandywine lead. St. Mary's netted the next four points to make the count 72-68 with less than 20 seconds to play, but Godhania sank two free throws to secure the victory.

Brandywine was limited to 34 percent shooting, but held a 47-43 edge on the boards and turned 14 offensive rebounds into 18 second-chance points.

Brandywine (16-9, 11-2 UEC) will face the winner of the No. 7 St. Mary's-No. 10 Keystone first round game on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 PM in a quarterfinal round matchup.
