Brandywine’s Second-Half Lead Slips Away In Overtime Defeat

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine allowed a 16-point, second-half lead to slip away as Cheyney rallied to defeat the Lions 83-80 in overtime in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine used a strong shooting effort to build a 46-38 lead at halftime. The Lions shot 57 percent from the field during the opening half (16-28) and drained seven three-pointers. Corwin Holland II (Bowie, Md./Rock Creek Christian) accounted for 15 of the Lions' first-half markers, including a late triple that gave Brandywine an eight-point edge.

Holland's three-pointer at the 18:36 mark of the second period jumpstarted a 9-0 run that gave the Lions their biggest lead of the day. Ja'bri White (Townsend, Del./St. Mark's) followed with a basket before Javon Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./String Theory) added a layup. White capped the run with a steal and thunderous dunk that made the count 58-42 with 16:42 to go.

The visitors steadily whittled into the Lions' lead, climbing within nine by the midway point of the stanza. Brandywine held a four-point edge with under 90 seconds to play, but a pair of baskets from Emmanuel Carson, including a put-back jumper with 10 seconds remaining, sent the game to overtime.

Brandywine held a one-point edge early in the extra session following Jack Swider's (Conshohocken, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) three-pointer, but the Wolves answered with consecutive baskets and led for the duration of overtime. The Lions had one final look at a game-tying three-pointer, but Swider's heave was off the mark.

Holland poured in 15 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead four double-figure scorers for Brandywine. Jaden Fogg (Morrisville, Pa./Morrisville) added 15 points, while White notched 13 and Nelson tallied 11.

Holland also topped the Lions on the boards with eight rebounds. Swider pulled in seven boards and Damir Shelley (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) contributed five boards and five assists.

Brandywine shot 49 percent from the field, but was hampered by poor free throw shooting, making just 11-of-23 shots from the stripe.

Brandywine (2-5) has a quick turnaround as the Lions visit Elmira Sunday at 2:00 PM.
