Brandywine Knocks Off Harrisburg For Crucial United East Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- Four late points from Bryan Warren (Sicklerville, N.J./Timbercreek) and Javon Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./String Theory) helped Penn State Brandywine seal a crucial United East Conference men's basketball victory over visiting Penn State Harrisburg by a score of 70-66 on Wednesday night.

The victory pushed Brandywine into a five-way tie with Harrisburg and three other teams for first place in the United East standings with two regular-season games to play. The victory also secured a bye for the Lions during the opening round of the conference tournament.

Aided by 11 points from Amari Little (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), Brandywine took a 31-28 lead into the second half, in which neither team held an advantage of more than six points.

The first of four second-half three-pointers from Corwin Holland II (Bowie, Md./Rock Creek Christian) handed Brandywine a 39-33 edge with 15:39 on the clock. The visitors rallied with 12 of the game's next 14 points to vault in front 45-41, but the Lions quickly tied the score thanks to consecutive layups from Jaden Fogg (Morrisville, Pa./Morrisville) and Ben Bass (Arlington, Va./Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School).

The teams exchanged the lead 13 times during the next 10 minutes before Brandywine pulled in front 65-64 as Holland canned another triple. Harrisburg tied the score at 65-all by knocking down 1-of-2 free throws with 3:07 to go.

Warren gave the Lions the lead for good by sinking a pair of shots from the charity stripe at the 2:43 mark. After Harrisburg came up empty during its ensuing possession, Nelson sank a fast-break jumper to give the Lions a four-point edge.

Clinging to a 69-65 advantage with under two minutes remaining in regulation, Brandywine's defense locked the visitors down, holding Harrisburg to 0-of-8 shooting from the field. Harrisburg added a free throw to its scoring total with 29 seconds on the clock to make it a one-possession game, but Jack Swider (Conshohocken, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) sank a free throw on the other end for the Lions to push the margin back to four and provide the final count.

Holland sank four triples and netted all of his team-high 17 points during the second half, while Little contributed 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Swider chipped in 10 points and four boards and Warren collected a team-best eight rebounds and three assists.

Brandywine overcame 20 turnovers by shooting 46 percent from the field, including an 11-of-22 mark from beyond the arc. The Lions limited Harrisburg to 38 percent shooting and 6-of-22 from long range.

Brandywine (14-9, 9-2 UEC) travels to Washington D.C. for its final road game of the regular season on Tuesday when the Lions visit Gallaudet at 5:00 PM.
