Brandywine Storms Back In Final Minutes To Best Berks
READING, Pa. – Jack Swider's (Conshohocken, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) corner three-pointer with 38 seconds to play capped a frantic, last-minute comeback as the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team stormed back to defeat Penn State Berks 71-65 on Thursday night.
Swider's triple was part of a 22-4 surge to end the game for the Lions, who won their second-straight contest. Marquis Ferreria gave the hosts a 61-49 with 4:57 to play, but Brandywine turned up the pressure on defense, forcing five turnovers, while allowing just one basket the rest of the way.
After falling behind by 12 points, Ja'bri White (Townsend, Del./St. Mark's) fueled the comeback, scoring eight-straight points, including a three-pointer that trimmed the margin to 61-57 with 2:58 to go. Ferreira canned a jumper during Berks' ensuing possession, but Swider answered with a triple. Following a Berks turnover, Jaden Fogg (Morrisville, Pa./Morrisville) converted a three-point play to knot the count at 63-all.
The Lions collected another turnover from the hosts, allowing Swider to can the go-ahead triple just in front of the team's bench as Brandywine took its first lead since the 5:43 mark of the opening half.
Corwin Holland II (Bowie, Md./Rock Creek Christian) secured the victory at the free throw line, knocking down 5-of-6 free throws during the final 24 seconds.
Holland led the Lions' scoring effort with 21 points and added five steals on the defensive end. White tallied 17 points and seven rebounds, while Swider knocked down four triples for 12 points and topped the Lions in rebounding with eight boards. Fogg contributed 11 points, seven boards and a pair of assists.
Brandywine won the rebounding battle 36-30 and scored 24 points off 18 Berks turnovers. The Lions shot 39 percent from the field, while knocking down 10 three-pointers.
