Brandywine Tops Keystone 69-63 In United East Quarterfinals

MEDIA, Pa. -- Second-seeded Penn State Brandywine survived a test from 10th-seeded Keystone, winning 69-63 in the United East Conference Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal round late Saturday night.

Brandywine, which will face third-seeded Cairn in the semifinals on the Lions' home floor Tuesday night, won its eighth-straight game, tying Brandywine for the 15th-longest active winning streak in Division III.

Corwin Holland II (Bowie, Md./Rock Creek Christian) paced the Lions offensively with 18 points, while Ja'bri White (Townsend, Del./St. Mark's) poured in 10 of his 16 points during the final 20 minutes. Holland and White shared the team rebounding lead with eight boards each. Ahmaar Godhania (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) chipped in 12 points.

Brandywine trailed 10-3 through five minutes, but rallied to build a nine-point advantage by the 7:26 mark of the first half. Tied 13-all at the 11:19 mark, Godhania buried a three-pointer to jumpstart a 12-2 Brandywine surge. Holland sandwiched a pair of triples around a jumper from Javon Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./String Theory), giving Brandywine a 24-15 lead.

The Giants answered with 10-straight points to vault back in front, but the Lions netted seven of the final 10 points, including Godhania's second three-pointer of the half, to grab a 32-28 halftime lead.

After Keystone scored the first five points of the second half to go back in front, the teams swapped the lead nine times during the next 12 minutes with neither squad holding a lead larger than three points.

The Lions trailed by one at the 7:11 mark when White connected for back-to-back baskets. Holland followed with a layup before White put an exclaimation point on an 10-0 run with a fast-break dunk as Brandywine went in front 60-51.

Keystone netted the next five points; however, Amari Little (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) canned a layup and a triple in a 39-second span, giving Brandywine its largest lead of the game at 10 points with exactly two minutes to play.

Keystone trimmed the margin as low as six points during the final minute, but Godhania tacked on a layup and two free throws to help secure the victory.

Brandywine was limited to 36 percent shooting, but committed just nine turnovers, compared to 15 by Keystone, and held a 50-43 edge on the boards. The Lions' defense limited Keystone to 33 percent shooting from the field.

Brandywine (17-9) will face Cairn for the third time this season on Tuesday night with the winner advancing to the United East championship. The Highlanders outlasted the Lions in a season-opening, double-overtime game, but Brandywine won the rematch in Langhorne by a 78-71 count.
